Future Solutions
The main solution that people are looking at is education. People need to be educated on these snakes and what damage they can do to the environment. Potential owners of the snakes must be taught how to correctly handle and take care of these animals. They need to understand more about the behavior and ecological impacts of these animals. With this education on the animals, we can reduce the amount of snakes that are released into the wild because of it being too hard to take care of. The education could ask discourage people from actually buying these snakes in the first place because, if they know how hard they are to take care of, they will not buy them. This will reduce the chances of extra snakes being let into the wild.
What You Can Do to Help Prevent the Spread of Invasive Snakes
• Discourage people from having Burmese Pythons as pets. Encourage them to do research before making a purchase so they know how much it takes to care for the animal
• Do not let someone let loose an exotic pet that they cannot take care of! Tell them to find someone who can care for that animal.
• People can report sightings of these snakes to the USNPS Python Line. They will go out and try to capture those snakes so they do not reproduce and worsen the problem. You can call 305-815-2080 or the Keys Python Line: 1-888-I've Got 1 (1-888-483-4681).
• Many Fire Departments or organizations will accept requests to remove pythons or unwanted reptiles and they will find a better place for them. You can call local authorities to find out if they will do this.
